History with Salazar Jack

Saturday afternoon found me at Info Island for an informative talk by a large blue gentleman, the famed Salazar Jack.

Mr. Jack discussed the history of Urtahra, destroyed in the Great Erase, and its connection with Linden Lab, including the great forest of Kahruvel, and how he came to find himself in New Babbage once upon a time.

Mr. HeadBurro Antfarm informed me of the talk, and was himself in attendance, in all his handsomeness.

Miss Nish Mip and Miss Miamax Paravane.

Your humble Journalist.

Our hostess, Miss Franja Russell, on the left. Next to her, the purple kangaroo, is Miss Tapple Gao. In front is Miss Osprey Therian, and on the right is Mr. Someone Sinister. (Just out of the picture is Mr. Douglas Quinn, who turns out to be a raven.)

A most interesting discussion followed the talk, with Mr. Jack answering insightful questions from the audience.

I got told off by the host for joining in the chat! As you'll know from Steamlands meetings and certainly from The Show Must Go On, most folks I know see the back & forth between speaker/act & audience as integral to the fun - not here it seems. I'll not be going back to Miss Russell's sims again - far too boring for my tastes (not the talk, the rules - christ on a bike, she'd shit a brick at one of the TSMGO shows!).

The Great Erase stuff was as interesting as ever though :-D

Most certainly, audience interaction is important. (Go to any Aether Salon and you'll find another example!) There's a fine line, of course - one doesn't want to interrupt the speaker's flow - but the nature of lag in SL is that the audience is hardly ever more than 30-40, so it's not the same as trying to interact with the speaker when you're one of 300 in a big auditorium.

I missed the rules, but you may find this amusing: near the end, I was contacted via IM and thanked for coming back and arriving clothed this time. After some deliberation on how to respond - outrage? nonchalance? - I politely expressed confusion, as I had never been there before, only knew of the talk through my friend HBA, and, oh, by the way, I usually wear the "full Victorian," so I was rather less clad than normal; I would never dream of showing up naked; she must have me confused with someone else.

We had a polite back and forth, the thrust of which was that a woman who may have been named some variation of Rhianon attended a talk starkers, and didn't see the need to wear clothes, though she seemed to be "distracting" (her word, not mine) to the gentlemen in attendance. Very amusing.

Heh, someone needs a stick removing from her arse, me thinks.

Like I say, I'll never go back - my time is too short in SL, and there are too many wonderful things to see in what is a huge world to worry about going to one place where honest fun (not griefing) is banned.

This once happened to me in the Greenies sim, waaay back in late 07 or early 08 - I was flying some folks around in a balloon and we landed on the counter top to explore the bread bin and sink when I received a terse IM about leaving my stuff out - when I tried to explain we were going to fly off again in a minute or two as we were exploring nearby, I got a reply as snotty as I got in Sal's talk when I pointed out I knew Sal of old (i.e I wasn't heckling). From that day to this I have never been to another Rezzable build, and I won't go back to where ever the hell this talk was. Fuck em.
